KUCHING: The Padungan White Cat is dressed in pua kumbu and not in ‘sirat and ketapu’ (loin cloth and head dress) as claimed by the Tun Jugah Foundation.

Kuching South City Council Mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng argued that the Padungan White Cat’s use of Iban culture attire was never the intention to disrespect or misappropriate the rich and vibrant heritage of the Iban Community.

Moreover, he said the council did not make any specific statement that it was a ‘sirat and ketapu’.

“Every year, the Padungan White Cat dons an attire representing different culture and religious festivals as a testament to diversity and unity among the communities.

“Therefore, during the festive season, the council does not wish to create any sensitivity among its community and will take necessary action to take down the clothing of the White Cat,” he said in his Facebook page.

He was reacting to Tun Jugah Foundation senior advisor Dr Peter Mulok Kedit who said dressing the Cat Statue in sirat and ketapu is a taboo to the Ibans.

Nevertheless, Wee said, the council values the feedback from the community.

“To ensure efficient and effective resolution to any issue, one can approach and contact the mayor personally.

“Making any public press statement is unnecessary as direct communication can provide faster and more personal response.

“Having said that, as we come together to celebrate the vibrant and joyous Gawai Dayak Festival, I wish everyone ‘Happy Gawai Dayak, Gaya Guru Gerai Nyamai’,” he said.
