MIRI: Pujut assemblyman Adam Yii Siew Sang hails the milestone decision on the historic agreement reached regarding Sarawak’s rights over its continental shelf land.
Yii who is also Miri City Mayor lauded the recent announcement by Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari as a significant achievement for the Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) government.
The announcement, which confirmed that Sarawak and the federal government have reached a solution based on constitutional provisions regarding the rights and powers to manage and use the continental shelf land, marks a historic milestone for the state.
According to the Premier, this matter was discussed during the first meeting of the National Energy Council, chaired by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar in Putrajaya recently.
The meeting concluded that land is an inviolable matter under Sarawak’s legislative and administrative authority.
While the continental shelf extends to 200 nautical miles, this range cannot affect Sarawak’s jurisdiction, and its boundaries must remain unaltered and respected.
Yii expressed heartfelt gratitude to the Prime Minister and the federal government for recognising and accepting this crucial legal fact.
He emphasised that it was through the support and recognition of the federal government that Sarawak could make this breakthrough on such a critical issue.
“This is a victory for the people of Sarawak,” Yii declared.
“The steadfast support of the Sarawakian people for the GPS government has been crucial in enabling the state government to negotiate from a position of political strength and achieve this breakthrough,” he said.
Hence, Yii urged the people of Sarawak to continue providing strong support to the GPS government to ensure even greater accomplishments in the future.
