KUCHING: The Kuching South City Council (MBKS) has been honoured with the JCI Malaysia Sustainable Development Award 2024, receiving recognition for its outstanding contribution to Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 12: Responsible Consumption and Production.

According to a statement today (Sept 24) the award celebrates MBKS’ groundbreaking iBuyBack project, a community-driven initiative aimed at promoting recycling and reducing waste across the city.

Mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng noted the importance of the initiative, saying: “We are profoundly honoured to receive the JCI Malaysia Sustainable Development Award. The iBuyBack project has transformed how our city approaches recycling, making it not only more accessible but also rewarding for our residents.

“This recognition is a testament to our ongoing commitment to creating a cleaner, greener Kuching South.”

The iBuyBack project, launched in 2022, offers residents an accessible platform to sell their recyclable materials directly to participating recycling centres.

Through a user-friendly mobile app, individuals can connect with local centres, making the process of recycling both easy and rewarding.
