KUCHING: The Kuching South City Hall (MBKS) Car Free Day and Kuching Earth Hour event will be held at Saradise here this Saturday (Mar 23).
Mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng said last year’s event was a success during the Kuching Earth Hour event, where Sarawak achieved notable reductions in carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions within a single hour.
He hoped the upcoming event will surpass last year’s achievements.
“Last year, MBKS alone achieved an eight-megawatt reduction, resulting in a CO2 reduction of 2400kg during this period. The overall reduction across Sarawak, excluding Limbang and Lawas, amounted to 33 megawatts, leading to a CO2 reduction of 9,900kg,” he told a press conference at the MBKS building today.
He emphasised the significance of such achievements within a brief timeframe and called for sustained efforts beyond a single day, advocating energy conservation and active participation in environmental conservation.
“Various companies including Kingwood Hotel, Boulevard Shopping Mall, Ibraco office, Viva Shopping Mall, Everise Supermarket, Aeon Mall, Farley Shopping Mall, Imperial Hotel, Raia Hotel, Aeroville Mall, and Saradise will participate in the programme.
“Additionally, all parks in Kuching, the MBKS Community Hall, the Song Kheng Hai Hawker Centre, and Stutong Market will represent MBKS.
“Letters have been sent to schools in the council’s area to raise student awareness about the event to encourage public participation,” he said.
An Earth Hour observation will also take place at the MBKS Building, featuring an evening of reflection and solidarity at the fourth Floor Council Chamber.
The Kuching Car Free Day is scheduled to start from 6 am to 10 am, while the Earth Hour event will commence from 8.30 pm to 9.30 pm.
