KUCHING: The Kuching South City Council (MBKS) is eager to extend its partnership with the Sarawak Society for the Prevention of Cruelty To Animals (SSPCA) to continue raising awareness and educating the public on responsible pet ownership.

MBKS mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng said their collaboration with the NGO has been instrumental in addressing issues related to animal abandonment and stray animals within the council’s jurisdiction.

He added their partnership has also contributed to improved enforcement of laws, particularly those related to dog licensing.

“Currently, we are now in the process of studying a proposal that SSPCA is helping us to offer a long term subsidised neutering programme for dogs and dealing with the abandonment and stray problems in Kuching.

“With that, we hope to reduce the incidence of rabies through vaccination programmes for dogs.

“Working with SSPCA provides better enforcement of law with regards to the licensing of dogs and reminds our pet owners that their pets must now be allowed to roam on the street freely as this is against our law,” said Wee.

He said this in a brief speech during the Wiggle Waggle Walk event held at MBKS’ Hokkien Garden this morning (Oct 14).

He also urged pet owners to support the effort to manage the stray animal population and expressed his hope that a neutering programme will soon be initiated.

Furthermore, Wee extended his appreciation to SSPCA for their collaboration with MBKS in organising community events and encouraged pet owners to participate in these programmes to gain a deeper understanding of their responsibilities in caring for their pets.
