KUCHING: Kuching South City Council (MBKS) endorses the use of environmentally friendly straws to replace single-use plastic straws.
MBKS mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng clarified that the move was taken in view of the upcoming ban on single-use plastic straws.
“After the recent announcement on the ban of single-use plastic straws, vendors are worried that customers may insist on having straws with their beverages.
He said customers would have to pay for the eco-friendly straws.
Wee was interviewed after chairing the MBKS full council meeting at the MBKS Office here yesterday.
He said there were straw suppliers who were worried about the impact of the ban on their business.
“We (MBKS) are not in business but we let the business people provide the alternatives.
“So for us, we are lucky there are people who approached us in the social media and told us they had a product which could serve as an alternative to conventional plastic straws,” said Wee.
He clarified that such straws were quite costly compared to single-use plastic straws. Therefore, the customers must pay for them.
