KUCHING: Pending Height Flats tenants have been given “several months” to form their own management committee to maintain and keep their surroundings clean.
Kuching South City Council (MBKS) mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng said that the 146 tenants should be well aware of their responsibility by setting up their own management committee.
“It is not difficult to form a management committee, but if they are not able to run it by themselves, there are always other management companies to help run it.
“After this, we will be meeting the tenants in our office to discuss further how to set up a management committee for them to run their area,” he said during a Pending Height Flats cleaning campaign yesterday morning.
Wee said the flat management committee would be responsible for cleaning and maintaining an area.
He said the reason why the cleaning campaign was organised was because Pending Height Flats was under MBKS and the council wanted to show them the way.
“We will try to help in maintaining their flats until a certain period of time, after that they should be able to handle it on their own.
“I will not give them a long time, maybe a few months to help with the maintenance and then they have to come out with their own committee,” he said
The campaign was organised together with Tanah Putih Community Association and Pending Height Village Development and Security Committee (JKKK).
On the issue of illegal dumping of wastes, Wee said, “We are looking at the by-laws to see how we can strengthen them so that those who illegally dump their wastes can be penalised.”
Last year on Sept 9, Sarawak United Peoples’ Party (SUPP) youth general secretary Milton Foo urged MBKS to invoke Section 27A(1)(b) and (c) of the Strata Titles Ordinance 1995 to take over the management of Pending Height Flats.
He said the residents of the flats were supposed to form a committee to look after the management and cleanliness of their low-cost housing flats.
“As it is not a government flat but under private development, the subsidiary proprietors (the unit owners) must form a management corporation to maintain the building and the common property as required under Section 23 of the Ordinance,” he said.
However, the failure to do so had resulted in overgrown weeds, garbage being dumped all over the places and blocked and clogged drains.
