KUCHING: Kuching South City Council (MBKS) is launching an education campaign targeting primary schools, secondary schools, universities and members of the public in conjunction with the plastic straw ban in MBKS jurisdiction.
As part of the campaign, MBKS in collaboration with Naked Wonders will organise an environmental awareness-related contest.
The contest involves three categories namely ‘A3 Poster Drawing Contest for Primary Schools’, ‘A3 Poster Creation Contest for Secondary Schools’ and ‘Creative Video Contest’.
The first category is opened to primary school students where each participating team must consist of four members. The teams are required to use Crayon and Water Colour to create the poster.
The champion will receive RM600 whereas the first and second runners-up will receive RM400 and RM300 respectively. There are also five consolation prizes with cash prize of RM100 each.
Meanwhile, the second category is opened to individual secondary school students, and comprises two subcategories namely Form 1 to 3 and Form 4 to 6. Each contestant is required to use software to create the A3 sized artwork and only one artwork from each student can be submitted.
The champion will receive RM500 whereas the first and second runners-up will receive RM400 and RM300 respectively. There are also five consolation prizes with cash prize of RM100 each.
For both categories, the submission of the A3 sized artworks along with the registration form must be submitted on or before March 31.
The third category – Creative Video Contest – is open to the general public aged 18 years old and above. Contestants are required to use software to create the video presentation and submit the video along with the registration form on or before April 9.
The champion will receive RM1,000 while the first and second runners-up will receive RM800 and RM600 respectively. There are also 5 consolation prizes with cash prize of RM300 each.
According to MBKS mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng, the council believes that advocacy starts from the community and thus, it would like to provide a platform for community members to advocate for this cause.
“Materials received from this contest will be used to raise awareness onthe importance of reducing plastic use,” he told reporters at a press conference held at MBKS building yesterday.
He noted that MBKS is now focusing on becoming a greener place, starting with its own council.
Steps have been taken to ensure all internal meetings are free of single use plastics. MBKS also plans to reduce plastic bag use and to encourage composting, all of which will be rolled out this year.
The contest registration form can be downloaded from MBKS’ official website https://mbks.sarawak.gov.my.
Also present at the press conference were MBKS Standing Committee (Environment and Tourism) Abdul Baderi Sahmat, the campaign’s organising chairlady Cr Yong Li Na, Naked Wonders co-directors Andre Kho and Melissa Kung.
