KUCHING: Majlis Bandaraya Kuching Selatan (MBKS) will observe the second MBKS Kuching Car-Free Morning on Oct 21 with a fun walk scheduled for flag-off at 7.35am.
The council has also decided to expand the route from Jalan Boulevard Canna Lily to Jalan Padungan and Jalan Tan Sri Datuk William Tan covering a distance of 3.20km.
“The closure of one lane at the above mentioned routes will start at 6am until 10am,” it said in a statement
Among the activities that will be held include a Senamrobik / Zumba at MBKS Square (starts at 7am) and also Fishing Competition – Kuching Park Pond (7.30am to 9.30am).
“Car-Free Day is a global initiative that encourages individuals to leave their
cars at home and explore alternative modes of transportation.
“By doing so, we can reduce traffic congestion, air pollution, and greenhouse
gas emissions, which are all significant challenges facing our cities today,”it said.
As a city council, we recognise the importance of continuously promoting sustainable urban mobility and have taken numerous steps to encourage alternative modes of transportation, it said.
“For example, we have invested in new bike lanes, improved public transportation services, and launched campaigns to promote walking and cycling.
“But there is still much more that we can do. We must continue to invest in sustainable urban mobility infrastructure, such as pedestrianised zones and bike lanes, and work with our partners to provide safe and accessible public transportation for all residents.”
The council invited the public to come and participate in the MBKS Kuching Car-Free Morning as a show of support for this awareness.
