KUCHING: The Kuching South City Council (MBKS) is repairing and upgrading drains in areas under its jurisdiction to prevent flash floods.
MBKS mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng said this, however, would take time and funding.
“MBKS has identified flood-prone areas such as Sungai Maong Kiri Catchment (Stampin Tengah, Hui Sing, Tong Wei Tah, Iris Garden, Seng Goon, Stampin, Lintang Park, Bong Chin), Sungai Tabuan Catchment (Tabuan Dayak, Upper Foochow, Sungai Apong), Sungai Stutong Catchment (Jalan Song, Tabuan Laru).
“…also Sungai Padungan Catchment (Jalan Sim Kheng Hong Selatan, Jalan Manggis, Mendu, Jalan Ellis, Jln Ban Hock), Sungai Sekama Catchment (Foochow 2B and 2E), Sungai Pengiran Catchment, Sungai Sarawak Catchment and Sungai Biawak Catchment.
“In most circumstances, if a property is flooded after a downpour, it can be due to the flow, drainage capacity or blockage issue.
“At this juncture, we have also deployed our maintenance team together with the contractors to inspect the flood-prone areas on a regular basis.
“This is to ensure that the drains and the natural waterways are free of any blockages. We have also installed flood markers at strategic areas to alert road users.”
Wee reminded the public, especially those residing in low-lying areas, to be extra vigilant during the rainy season.
“The public are also reminded to avoid throwing garden waste or rubbish indiscriminately. If there is any blockage, they can report to the council or community members can assist to clear.
“Due to climate changes, flash flood is happening not only in Kuching but everywhere in the world. Road users must avoid using submerged roads, especially during the king tide.”
