KUCHING: The Kuching South City Council (MBKS) will be giving away free lanterns and mooncakes to celebrate the Mid-Autumn Festival at the Malaysia-China Friendship Park, Jalan Song.
Mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng said the giveaway, to be held on Friday (Sept 29), will be on a ‘first come, first served’ basis.
“The ‘Persatuan Persahabatan Zong Ho Kuching’ has prepared about 1,000 lanterns and mooncakes to be distributed for free to the park visitors from 6.30pm onwards.
“The objective of the event is to foster unity among Sarawak’s diverse community through the traditional activity of carrying lanterns while enjoying a walk and appreciating the beautiful glow of the moon.
“It is an ideal opportunity for families, friends, and the community to come together, enjoy the serene ambiance of the park, and illuminate the night with colourful lanterns,” he said.
He added that the Malaysia-China Friendship Park is not only a testament to the strong bond between nations but also a symbol of unity and harmony within the local community.
Wee said the lantern giveaway is another demonstration of the council’s commitment to nurturing the values of sharing the festive celebrations with other races.
During the event, the Chinese Martial Art Association will perform an exciting lion dance performance.
“In view of the coming festival, the public are advised to not release any sky lanterns or ‘Kunming lanterns’ into the sky as it poses danger to the surrounding houses and such act will also interfere with the flight routes near the Kuching International Airport,” Wee said.
