MIRI: The Miri City Council (MCC) is keen to collaborate with various organisations and agencies to enhance and make an impact for its Car-Free Day event.

Speaking at the city’s Car-free fay event held along North Yu Seng Road on Saturday morning, MCC mayor, Adam Yii Siew Sang emphasised the broader environmental and social benefits of the initiative.

“Our Car-free day also acts as a powerful catalyst for environmental education and awareness,” Yii stated.

“It sparks conversations about sustainability, climate change, and the pivotal role each of us contribute in preserving our planet. By raising awareness and encouraging proactive measures, we are nurturing a generation of environmentally conscious citizens dedicated to making a positive difference” he said.

The Car-free day is a crucial component of Miri’s broader strategy to become a low carbon city.

This initiative aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and promote sustainable urban development. By limiting vehicular traffic and encouraging eco-friendly transportation option, MCC is making strides toward lowering the city’s carbon footprint.

Furthermore, such effort aligns with global climate change mitigation strategies and underscores Miri’s commitment to sustainable urban planning and environmental stewardship.

The initiative goes beyond reducing emissions, as it seeks to transform the urban landscape, encourage healthier lifestyles, and build a stronger sense of community.

“Today, as we walk, cycle, and enjoy the car-free streets, let us also reflect on the positive changes we can make in our daily lives to reduce our carbon footprint,” Yii remarked.

“Moreover, these events serve as a wonderful opportunity for community building. They bring together residents from all walks of life, fostering interactions that strengthen our social fabric,” he added.

The success of the event was marked by a significant achievement, resulting in a reduction of 1.6 tonnes of carbon emissions in just four hours.

This reduction is equivalent to removing approximately 350 cars from the road for a day or planting 25 trees and allowing them to grow for ten years.

Thus, it highlights the profound impact such initiatives can have on mitigating climate change and preserving the planet for future generations.

Car-free day is not only about reducing emissions, it’s about reimagining the city’s landscape and promoting healthier, more sustainable lifestyles.

“As residents of Miri come together to enjoy these car-free streets, they are also laying the groundwork for a more united and resilient community,” Yii said.

MCC’s efforts in organising Car-free day exemplify the positive changes possible through collaborative environmental action, and they continue to pave the way for a greener, more sustainable future for Miri City.
