KUCHING: MCIS Insurance Berhad (MCIS Life) has recently pledged RM1mil towards planting 5,000 endemic rainforest trees within the vicinity of its sustainability site, named the MCIS Life Legacy Forest Sireh Park, located in Iskandar Puteri, Johor.

The initiative is part of the company’s commitment to conserve and protect the environment, contributing to the mitigation of climate change effects.

In a press release, MCIS Life stated that they are planting the seeds for the future, recognising that combating global warming is a collective responsibility.

“By planting carefully selected endemic rainforest trees known for their significant carbon offset capabilities, the company aims to play a leading role in preserving biodiversity.

“The endemic rainforest tree planting initiative aligns with the company’s targeted action plan towards the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

“Specifically, it contributes to SDG 13, which focuses on Climate Action. The company has been actively involving its key stakeholders, including employees, distribution partners, customers, and the local community, including schoolchildren, in raising awareness about the global threat of rising temperatures and climate change.

“The planting of the 5,000 saplings is being carried out in stages, with the goal of completion by August 2023. Combined with the existing 1,280 trees on the site, these efforts are projected to offset approximately 567 tonnes of carbon by 2029 as the trees stabilise and mature over time.”

MCIS Life reported that as of December 31 of the previous year, the pilot initiative involving 1,280 trees contributed to an estimated 30.03 tonnes of carbon offset during the reporting period. “This represents an increase from the estimated 17.6 tonnes recorded on Dec 31, 2021.”
