CYBERJAYA: The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) restricts 6,381 online gambling websites from 2020 up to the end of the year 2022.
MCMC stressed its commitment in supporting the enforcement made by the Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM) in its efforts to eradicate online gambling as stated under the Common Gaming Houses Act 1953 (289 Act).
This was following pressures from an association for online gambling platforms to be controlled.
The Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM) will be undertaking further action; however, MCMC would provide technical assistance to PDRM by supplying information and online gambling restrictions based on permissions from PDRM.
“For 2020 until 2022, MCMC had restricted 6,381 online gambling, based on official demands from PDRM under the Act 289 offence.
“Meanwhile, a total of 212,399 telephone lines including mobile and fixed lines sending dubious text messages such as promoting online gambling, unlicensed loans and others have been terminated from 2020 until 2022,” MCMC said in a statement.
MCMC also informed that besides enforcement, creating awareness, education as well as self-control are keys to curb online gambling.
Apart from that users would need to play an important role to curb this issue, for example reporting to MCMC regarding promotional gambling advertisements which are received through SMS.
This would then cancel online transactions with help from telecommunication prepaid services.
If the users accept online advertisements through short messages such WhatsApp and other social media platforms like Facebook, they can report by calling the call line or social media accounts to service provider applications. Or they can contact social media platform receivers for numbers not to be sent to promotional gambling advertisements users.
