MUKAH: Dalat/Mukah District Council (MDDM) on Monday launched its “No Plastic Bag” campaign at two shopping outlets here.
The shopping outlets were Medan Mall Shopping Complex at Mukah New Township Extension 2 and Mr DIY at Medan Setia Raja Commercial Centre.
The campaign, the first to be conducted in Mukah Division, was officiated by Ministry of Local Government and Housing Permanent Secretary, Bakrie Zaini.
It is learnt that the campaign would be enforced every Saturday and Sunday, and if the customers insist on having plastic bags, they have pay 20 sen for each bag.
Customers are encouraged to bring along their own reusable bags while shopping.
Also present at the launching of the campaign on Monday were MDDM Walikota, Haji Kadir Haji Jamil, MDDM Deputy Walikota, Cr Mawar Ak Awang, MDDM Secretary, Hajah Norhalimah Haji Mohd Hamni, Medan Mall Supermarket Manager, Albert Chong and MDDM Councillors.
According to a leaflet distributed during the launching, the use of a reusable bag can save an average of six plastic bags per week.
“That’s 24 bags a month, 288 bags a year, and 22,176 bags in an average lifetime, and if one out of 5 people in Mukah do this, we will save over one billion bags in our lives,” it said.
