MDDM launches ‘No Plastic Bag’ campaign at shopping outlets

MUKAH: Dalat/Mukah District Council (MDDM) on Monday  launched its “No Plastic Bag” campaign at two shopping outlets here.

The shopping outlets were Medan Mall Shopping Complex  at Mukah New Township Extension 2 and Mr DIY at  Medan Setia Raja Commercial Centre.

The campaign,  the first to be conducted in   Mukah Division,  was officiated by  Ministry of Local Government and Housing Permanent Secretary, Bakrie Zaini.

It is learnt that the  campaign would be enforced every  Saturday and Sunday, and if the customers insist on having plastic bags, they have pay 20 sen for each bag.

Customers are encouraged to bring along their own reusable  bags while shopping.

Also present at the launching of the campaign on Monday were MDDM Walikota, Haji Kadir Haji Jamil, MDDM Deputy Walikota, Cr Mawar Ak Awang, MDDM Secretary, Hajah Norhalimah Haji Mohd Hamni, Medan Mall Supermarket Manager, Albert Chong and  MDDM Councillors.

According to  a leaflet distributed during the launching, the use of a reusable bag can save an average of six plastic bags per week.

“That’s 24 bags a month, 288 bags a year, and 22,176 bags in an average lifetime, and if one out of 5 people  in Mukah do this, we will save over one billion bags in our lives,” it said.
