MIRI: Medan Miri Hospital is expected to be completed by the end of February 2024.

According to Minister for Transport, Datuk Seri Lee Kim Shin, the project is a collaboration between the Sarawak government and the Sarawak Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) to build a semi-permanent hospital with a capacity of 100 beds.

He said that the project, with a cost of RM2.5mil allocated by the state government, included the construction of the Medan Hospital’s semi-permanent physical structure, sheltered walkways, toilet cabins and also electrical and mechanical works.

“Implementation started in November 2022 and originally scheduled to be completed in February 2023, but it was delayed due to cable ordering issues.

“I have directed the Public Works Department (JKR) in collaboration with Miri Division Resident’s Office, the contractor involved, Miri Hospital and the relevant agencies to hold a meeting to address any arising issue and hope that this project can be completed on time by the end of February 2024,” Lee was quoted as saying in Sarawak Public Communications Unit (Ukas) report during his working visit to the project site recently.

The construction of Medan Miri Hospital is to help reduce congestion at Miri Hospital, particularly in terms of providing additional space as well as increasing the number of beds for patients with serious infectious diseases, whether patients in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) or non-ICU patients.

“Medan Hospital was previously established under SDMC to accommodate Covid-19 patients.

“However, if there are no cases of Covid-19, it can also be used for regular patients,” he said.

Also present were Miri Hospital director Dr Jack Wong Siew Yu, Miri Division Resident Jamalie Busri and Miri Division JKR engineer Stephen Ung.
