KUCHING: The media practitioners play an important role in reducing the understanding gap between the government and society.
Deputy Minister in the Premier’s Department (Corporate Affairs, Information and UKAS) Datuk Abdullah Saidol said that one of the significant roles of journalists is to bridge the information and understanding gap between the government and society.
“Through journalists, the government can understand the concerns of the public. Feedback from netizens or the community will help the government structure various development agendas and incentives for those in need.
“And also, through journalists, the government also shares its planning and administrative policies for governing the state or country,” said Abdullah.
He said this in his speech during the launching ceremony of National Journalists’ Day (HAWANA) 2024 exhibition at the main atrium of Plaza Merdeka Shopping Centre here, on Saturday.
Abdullah also said that the evolution of thought and maturity of a society regarding nation, cultural understanding, infrastructure development, identity, and socioeconomics are largely the result of the work and reporting of journalists.
“The writings of journalists that bring various life stories and human values have provided information for society since before independence.
“The historical contributions and roles of media personnel, particularly journalists, have long been undeniable in the formation of a nation’s civilisation and modernity.
“Moreover, the movement and struggle for independence began with the writings of journalists, which successfully sparked awareness and uprising,” he said.
However, he said, the challenges and sacrifices journalists face in obtaining news and producing reports and stories are rarely shared with the public.
“For a long time, they have various difficulties to get news and share stories and events with the community, which is rarely discussed. But for those who understand, such an occasion is an opportunity for the public to get to know them and share their experiences,” Abdullah added.
