KUCHING: There is an increasing need for skilled professionals particularly in the state’s medical sector.
In stating this, Political Secretary to the Premier Kho Teck Wan said the recent selection of Sarawak General Hospital (SGH) by Roche Pharmaceuticals as its site for a first-in-human (FIH) clinical trial shows there is an increasing demand for skilled professionals in the fields of medicine in the future.
“At the same time as what Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg has always mentioned, students are encouraged to consider fields aligned with science.
“This is because of Sarawak’s transition towards green energy and green economy,” she said during Cyberjaya College Kuching’s Open Day and Health Carnival here on Saturday (Apr 20).
Earlier, Kho, who was representing Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian also gave advice to secondary school graduates to look into three important factors when they enter colleges or universities.
“Firstly, prospective students must identify their passions. Find out what you like to do the most.
“For instance, if you happen to be doing something for the first hour, and you continue to do it for the second hour and by the time you finish it in six hours, you lose track of time and that is when you know that you are doing something that you love,” she said.
Secondly, she said it was important for students to recognise their strengths and weaknesses and focus on what they are good at.
“Finally, students need to choose a career path that ensures sustainability.
“So, try to look and find out what you really like, what you can do better and go for it and so you will not have trouble supporting yourself in future,” said Kho.
