KUCHING: Melexis, a global microelectronics engineering company, has opened its largest wafer testing site in the world at Sama Jaya High Tech Park, here.

According to Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, the new facility marks a pivotal step in Sarawak’s effort to be in tandem with the latest technology in all sectors of its economic development.

“This facility is already very friendly to our sustainability effort, where every detail, from the underground tech system to the solar panels, reflects the commitment to sustainability and efficiency.

“This building is undoubtedly the most advanced of its kind in Samajaya and there are spaces there to expand. With an impressive 90 semiconductor wafer test equipment dedicated to testing integrated circuits, including not only Melexis’s top-selling magnetic sensor IC, but also innovative products for the exciting world of robotics.”

He said this during the grand opening ceremony of Melexis at Sama Jaya High Tech Park here on Wednesday.

The Premier noted there are growing role of advanced chips in various sectors, including automotive and medical devices.  

“I had a discussion just now with the chairwoman of Melexis on the development and technological advancement in the chip industry. It’s not only in automotive, but there is a trend in medical devices.

“Now the development of Artificial Intelligence (AI), it all depends on how the chips are designed and produced to give strength to the devices that have a chip embedded in it,” he added.

Abang Johari said in 2022, Sarawak made a significant step by collaborating with Melexis and Sarawak Microelectronics Design (SMD) Semiconductor.

“This partnership aims to produce skilled designers who can adapt to advancements in chip technology,” he said.

He also stressed the importance of Melexis collaboration with local institutions and universities for robust research and development (R&D), particularly in healthcare technology, where robotic devices are increasingly vital.

On a related note, Abang Johari said the state government is very determined to diversify, evolve and to embrace high-end industries.

“The reason being, we have certain advantages in the energy generation. In fact, I have given them a target. By 2030, we are able to produce 10 gigawatts of power.

“At the moment, we have an installed capacity of 5,700 megawatts. Within these three years, myself and my cabinet are going to the ground to explore various technologies that can generate RE, renewable energy, as the strength for us to provide the required energy in all economic activities,” he said.
