MIRI: Five men aged between 15 to 41 years including one with a ‘Datuk’ title were apprehended by the police in connection with a fight that broke out inside a bistro at Jalan North Yu Seng here recently.
Miri police chief ACP Lim Meng Seah who confirmed the arrest said one of the suspects, said to be the bistro owner’s son, sustained injuries in the incident.
“For the man with a ‘Datuk’ title, we will carry out investigation to find out whether the title is genuine or not,” he said.
Police also seized a BMW car belonging to the ‘Datuk’. A preliminary check conducted on the car showed it bore a fake registration number.
Lim said the brawl started due to misunderstanding between two groups of men who were drinking at the bistro. They were all suspected to be under the influence of alcohol.
“The premises’ manager who happens to be the son of the bistro owner had attempted to break up the fight, but he eventually ended up being beaten by the groups,” he said.
The case is being investigated under Section 147 of the Penal Code for rioting.
