KUCHING: Mental health care should be taken seriously by the community, especially among media practitioners, said Datuk Abdullah Saidol.
The Deputy Minister in the Premier’s Department (Corporate Affairs, Information and UKAS) said that mental health care awareness among the media practitioners need to be enhanced for their well-being.
Abdullah acknowledged that this group is exposed to many news that may contain sensitive content, thus emphasised the importance of media practitioners taking care of their own mental health.
He made these remarks during the ‘Let’s Talk Content: Breaking News, Breaking Minds: The Trauma of Media Coverage and Mental Health’ Forum, organised by Content Forum together with Era Sarawak held here, today.
Additionally, he also called on the entertainment industry and media practitioners to produce media content that can motivate the public.
The forum was aimed at discussing the media landscape in Malaysia and its relationship with public mental health, considering that media platforms play a crucial role in shaping the minds of the general public.
The panel of the forum consisted of psychiatrist Dr Ravivarma Rao from Miri Hospital, founder of Awareness Against Suicide (AWAS) Malaysia, Alia Ali and journalist Norman Goh from Nikkei Asia.
