KUCHING: Emotional and mental health issues should be prioritised by the masses, including frontline officers.
Speaking at the state-level World Counselling Day seminar on Wednesday (Oct 19), Deputy Premier Datuk Seri Dr Sim Kui Hian said the ability for everyone to help themselves was the first step in developing crucial helping skills.
“Emphasis on emotional wellness to assist frontline officers who frequently face stress in their line of work to optimise and manage their emotions from becoming overpowering.
“Creating peace and wellbeing in the workplace through intensive emotional management,” he said during the seminar held at the Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) headquarters here.
He added that even those with a well-educated family and a good career were not exempted from problems that induce mental health issues that stemmed from their work environment, family, finance, relationship and health.
“Sometimes, this problem may cause a change in our behaviour and our communication with others.
“Emotional health has a deep effect in our social life, not to mention our family.”
He explained that the theme for the seminar, ‘Emotional Health is Your Core’, played a major role in daily life as “it is significant to mental health as it may and could affect our cognitive, coping skills and also one’s social life.”
“Emotions are the core that cannot be separated from our mental health issues,” he added.
Dr Sim hoped that the stigma on mental health could be reduced after attending the seminar.
