KUCHING: Firemen managed to calm down a mentally ill man who was shouting and gesturing hysterically from the second floor of a shophouse at MJC, Batu Kawa this afternoon.

Members of the public who heard him shouting and gesturing furiously at the window of the second floor of a building there called the Fire and Rescue Department. They thought that he was going to jump from the building.

Firemen who received the call at 2.22 pm rushed to the scene to find the man sitting on a chair, gesturing and talking alone. They then talked to him and managed to calm him down in 15 minutes.

Early this month, a 16-year-old student jumped to her death after 69 per cent of her friends told her to die when she put out a poll asking whether she should live or die.

The girl from a broken family jumped when she was alone in the shophouse rented by her mother.
