BINTANGOR: Renowned for its food production, Meradong District has introduced its first hybrid rice field, introducing high-quality rice strains in the Sungai Padi Bintangor area.

Meradong assemblyman Datuk Ding Kuong Hiing said this venture marks the commencement of the groundbreaking hybrid rice project in the region, reflecting the dedication of Meradong’s indigenous population.

The trial project, covering 25 hectares, is managed by Onemas Agriculture Sdn Bhd.

“The success of rice cultivation in China, with at least three harvests per year, serves as inspiration.

“After 21 days, we observe the physical growth of the plants, and after another 21 days, the seedlings are transferred to the fields,” Ding was quoted in an Ukas report during the Hybrid Rice Cultivation Processing Briefing held recently.

He explained that he presented the project during the State Legislative Assembly (DUN) sitting, urging ministerial attention due to its potential economic benefits for Meradong District.

Ding also proposed the reopening of the previously less successful mini rice field in Sungai Tulai, underlining the significance of the hybrid rice project in establishing new agricultural sites and providing local economic opportunities.

“I also mentioned the mini rice field scheme in the Sungai Tulai area, covering over 600 hectares, during the DUN sitting. We hope this pioneering scheme succeeds.”
