SIBU: The Sarawak 60 Years Independence Convoy created a sense of patriotism among the people throughout the state, said Datuk Dr Annuar Rapaee.

The Deputy Minister of Education, Innovation, and Talent Development said that having a sense of patriotism is what we want to inculcate among our people.

“60 years of ‘merdeka’ (independence) is a long journey. So, this is an important occasion for us, especially to mark the 60th anniversary of ‘merdeka’. It is to revive what has been the struggle of our precious leaders.

Dr Annuar speaks to reporters. Also seen were Tiang (left) and Hii (right).

“It is important. If not, our young generation did not know what happened in the last 60 years,” he said when met by reporters after visiting the digital exhibition programme in conjunction with the Sarawak 60 Years Independence celebration at the Indoor Stadium here today (June 18).

Earlier, Dr Annuar waved the Sarawak flag and the Sarawak 60 Years Independence flag alongside Deputy Minister of Public Health, Housing, and Local Government Michael Tiang Ming Tee and Deputy State Secretary Datuk Hii Chang Kii as the symbolic start of the convoy in Sibu (from June 18 to 19) before proceeding to Kanowit on June 20.

Meanwhile, on the digital exhibition, Dr Annuar, who is also the Nangka assemblyman, said that the exhibition is important to inspire us to work harder in the future for Sarawak to attain the status of a developed state by 2030.

“I think they (all the ministries) have done a fantastic job. This is not easy, from Lawas straight away to Kuching. It is a huge area to cover, and the exhibition is almost in every town.

“The convoy itself is not only in town but in every part of town (with various pit stops). So, this type of programme is extensive and takes a lot of time to plan for,” he said.
