MONTHLY minimum wage will not apply to the community leaders and tribal leaders as it only applies to private sector workers, said Minister for Infrastructure and Port Development Sarawak Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas.
He said that the government currently as of now, does not have a proposal to increase the minimum allowance rate for community leaders and tribal leaders.
As a result, community leaders and ‘ketua kaum’ in Sarawak, according to Uggah, are exempt from the new ruling.
He was responding to requests for increased allowances for local community leaders from Pelagus assemblyman Wilson Nyabong Ijang and Katibas assemblyman Lidam Assan.
“As you are aware, their services are voluntary, and they are not classified as civil servants,” he pointed out.
He stated this in his ministerial winding-up speech to the Sarawak Legislative Assembly (DUN) sitting yesterday.
Furthermore he said that the proposal from Bukit Semuja assemblyman John Ilus to establish the position of ‘Temenggong Melayu’ in Serian will be taken into consideration.
