TATAU: Datuk Seri John Sikie Tayai has stressed the transformative power of education, noting its role in changing the economic circumstances of individuals and their families.
Speaking at the Excellent Student Awards ceremony for SK Tatau yesterday (Feb 7), the Minister in the Sarawak Premier’s Department underscored the need for collaboration between parents and educators to support children in their educational journey.
He said the Sarawak government is committed to fostering an educated and skilled generation to achieve the state’s goal of becoming a high-income state by 2030.
The target is a household income of at least RM15,000. He stressed the importance of education and skills in enabling individuals to secure higher salaries, with a goal of having students pursue education up to the degree level.
“We aim for two or three of our children to successfully pursue education up to the degree level. These individuals are also the potential leaders of the future.”
During the ceremony, Sikie presented various awards, including the Primary School Leaving Certificate, Academic and Co-Curricular Achievement Certificate Awards, Student Affairs Awards and Certificates, Proactive Parent Award, and Special Student Awards.
The event aimed to recognise and appreciate the achievements of students and promote a supportive environment for education.
In addition to acknowledging academic accomplishments, the Proactive Parent Award was presented to Demit Ngong, and the Student Figure of SK Tatau Award was conferred upon Irvan Marcell Egai.
In addition to the certificate, Irvan also received a cash prize of RM2,000 as a personal contribution from the Kakus assemblyman.
The SK Tatau Student Figure Award was given to him for his involvement and achievements in statewide public speaking competitions, participating in statewide speech contests, participating in statewide choir competitions, participating in statewide chess competitions, participating in divisional archery competitions, winning the district-level speech contest, securing third place in the district-level storytelling competition, participating in integrated uniform camps at the school level, and participating in school-level crossword puzzle competitions.
