KUCHING: Telecommunication service providers have been urged to invest and extend their coverage to Sarawak’s rural areas.
Minister of Utilities and Telecommunications Datuk Julaihi Narawi pointed out that this would mutually benefit the service providers and Sarawakians.
“Telcos have been providing their services in urban and suburban areas. We are now urging them to invest in rural areas as well.
“This is because in the long run, they will reap the benefits. It will be good for them and Sarawakians as a whole, so it is a win-win situation.”
Julaihi said this at a press conference after an engagement session with telecommunication agencies and service providers here yesterday.
On the engagement session, he stated that collaboration among all stakeholders was crucial to ensure maximum benefits for Sarawakians.
He pointed out that good collaboration would facilitate achieving the target of full network coverage in Sarawak by 2025.
“The engagement session is one of our efforts to strengthen the collaboration between the ministry with telecommunication agencies and service providers.
“During the session, various inputs and proposals on measures in providing connectivity in Sarawak were highlighted. Besides that, challenges and issues faced by agencies and service providers were also discussed.”
