ASAJAYA: Minister for Utility and Telecommunication, Datuk Seri Julaihi Narawi is set to initiate a study aimed at holding accountable third parties responsible for the destruction of water pipes.

He stressed his intention to inform the agencies under the ministry about potential clauses within the Water Ordinance, 1994.

According to him, if such clauses exist, third parties causing pipe damage should be held responsible.

Highlighting the role of the Rural Water Supply Department, he noted that their responsibility lies solely in conducting repairs.

In the event of future incidents, individuals causing the damage should shoulder responsibility.

“I have asked related parties to conduct further studies on how we can hold these individuals accountable.”

Acknowledging occasional water leak situations, he stressed the need for appropriate action to ensure a continuous water supply.

Julaihi was speaking to the media following his site visit to the Asajaya Water High Tank here on Friday (Jan 26).

Addressing the ongoing water piping replacement project, which commenced this year, he estimated a five-year timeline for completion.

With a total of 2,700km of water pipes across Sarawak, he urged awareness of the time-consuming nature of the project.

“We will do our best to ensure the project is completed within our estimated timeline, seeking cooperation from everyone to ensure a smooth process.”

He reassured that ample water supply has been provided to almost every part of Samarahan, particularly Asajaya and Sebuyau.

Highlighting the significance of water as a utility under the Post Covid-19 Development Strategy 2030, Julaihi pledged continued efforts to guarantee sufficient water supply for all Sarawakians.
