SIBU: Almost 30 per cent among the UPSR students nationwide are not competent, disclosed Assistant Minister of Education and Technological Research Dr Annuar Rapaee. He believed that the main cause of this weakness among students is due to weakness in the school leadership. “Good leadership will help to improve a school’s performance.
Thus, the Ministry is presently conducting a three-day leadership course for headmasters throughout the State. “We started last week in northern zone, covering Miri, Bintulu, Limbang and Lawas. The next one will be in February, which will be for the central zone before we move to the southern zone in Kuching.
“We wa n t t o ma k e s u r e that the headmasters have an impor tant role to play in the success rate of the students. Of course, we would also want the teachers to have a better way in their teaching approach so that we can get better results,” he said.
Dr Annuar was speaking to reporters after officiating at a mass circumcision programme organised by DUN Nangka Service Centre at An Nur Mosque here yesterday.
“Of course, there are many other factors like facilities, Internet connection and so on but basically, school leadership plays a very important role. “Parents also need to keep an eye on their children, especially teenagers, to ensure that they are not involved in social problems,” he added.
