Ministry helping athletes to excel: Abdul Karim

THE Ministry of Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development (MYSED) is persistent in encouraging and supporting athletes and sportsmen to accomplish their mission of winning national and international competitions.

Its Minister Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said the Sarawak government has allocated sport facilities throughout divisional and district levels to strengthen communal rapport, promote social bonds and support youths in the urban and rural areas.

Under the 12th Under Malaysia Plan (12MP), he said RM144.6 million was approved while another RM237 million under Projek Rakyat was approved with a total sum of RM RM381.6 million for the facilities.

“With 22 Project Rakyat and 61 12MP physical projects approved, my ministry is committed to providing conducive, safe and standard sport facilities for youths, rural communities and sportsmen, as well as identifying and developing the sports potential.

“At present, these projects are in various stages of implementation in which 38 of them are under planning; 35 projects are under implementation; and 10 projects are completed,” he said in his ministerial winding-up speech today.

Following this, Karim stated that projects ‘under planning projects’ category are mostly new ones approved under Projek Rakyat and Mid-Term Review of the 12MP, while others are under tender documentation.

“My ministry and its implementing agencies will continue to work together in ensuring all projects under Projek Rakyat and the 12MP will be implemented and completed on schedule,” he said.

Touching on the preparation for SUKMA XXI Sarawak 2024, he said his ministry and its agencies along with the Sarawak Sports Corporation (SSC) will ensure the venues are well prepared and according to specifications.

He pointed out that 24 facilities have been identified for upgrade and three new facilities are under construction and expected to be completed by July this year.
