SIBU: The Ministry of Science, Technology, and Innovation (Mosti) launched the Ruang Daya Cipta (RDC) here on today (Sept 9) as part of its efforts to foster the values of Science, Technology, Innovation and Economy (STIE) among communities, particularly in rural areas.

According to a press statement by Yayasan Inovasi Malaysia (YIM), RDC is an initiative by Mosti, implemented by YIM, to provide Malaysian communities with easier access to science, technology and innovation (STI) facilities and equipment.

“RDC Sibu, fully completed on Dec 6, 2023, is equipped with various STIE-related technologies such as computers, 3D printers, a digital studio set, and other cutting-edge facilities to benefit the local community,” the statement read.

Since its commencement, RDC Sibu has attracted over 500 visitors from the local community, with 203 participants attending 21 training modules by August 2024.

YIM expressed hope that through the training and capacity-building programs conducted at the RDC, participants could leverage technology to generate income following the 10-10 STIE Ecosystem, which focuses on subscription business models and network economies.

“This approach is expected to develop entrepreneurs from the B40 group and rural areas by emphasising high-impact innovation,” YIM said.

The initiative also provides the community an opportunity to engage in innovation activities using available technologies such as 3D printers, robotics, drones, and other equipment in practical ways.

“This, in turn, can improve the quality of life, productivity, and economic wellbeing of the community by fostering the generation of marketable ideas and creativity.

“Overall, RDC contributes to economic development, improved quality of life, and societal wellbeing, aligning with efforts to achieve high-tech nation status by 2030,” YIM added.

RDC Sibu, located at the Sibu Digital Innovation Hub on Jalan Kuda, was officially launched by Mosti secretary-general Datuk Dr Aminuddin Hassim.

To date, YIM has successfully developed 17 RDCs across Malaysia, including three in Sabah and Johor, two each in Perak, Pahang and Sarawak, and one each in Negeri Sembilan, Terengganu, Kelantan, Kedah and Selangor.
