KUCHING: The Modernisation of Agriculture and Regional Development Ministry is crafting ways to encourage more participation in agricultural activities in the state.
Its Deputy Minister Datuk Dr Abdul Rahman Ismail in emphasising its importance, said he is seeking ways to ensure agriculture is not seen as a second choice when it comes to finding a career path.
“We want this to be the first choice by increasing agricultural yields through application of advanced technologies in agriculture,” he said.
He said this at the presentation of Wakalah Zakat Contribution and Management Grant to Sarawak State Farmers’ Organisation (PPNS) at a hotel here on Tuesday (Apr 26).
Dr Abdul Rahman noted that the state has a long way to go to achieve food security.
However, he assured that the National Farmers Organisation (NAFAS) and PPNS as well as its members including Area Farmers’ Organisations (PPK) are the way forward in achieving this soon.
Elaborating on the Wakalah Zakat Contribution and Management Grant, he said the RM428,000 contribution was made by NAFAS.
“These contributions will be given to the asnaf group (underprivileged group) to ease their burden and to ensure they can celebrate Hari Raya.
“Some of the contributions have also been distributed to recipients in my Bukit Kota area through a programme organised recently,” he said.
He also thanked NAFAS for the generous contribution which he described as sufficient to aid those in need.
