KUCHING: Shrimp farmers can rest assured of the full support of the Ministry for Modernisation and Regional Development to increase their production to improve the state’s economy.
Minister Datuk Seri Dr Stephen Rundi Utom said there are a few potential locations to be explored for with an acreage of 7,000 hectares.
“Location such as Rambungan will become the primary location, but we will also be looking at Lawas, Sungai Rajang and Sarikei for shrimp farming,” he said.
Once the farming locations are available, they are expected to generate as much as RM1 billion in revenue every year.
“That being said, we need those 7,000 hectares to develop ponds to achieve the target,” he added.
He was speaking at the memorandum of understanding (MoU) signing ceremony here between Sarawak Farmers Association (PPNS) and Sea Horse Corporation Bhd for the shrimp farming project, yesterday (Sept 7).
Rundi said Sea Horse Corporation, a shrimp export company, has entered several international markets such as Hong Kong, Australia, Japan and Singapore.
“This is not something new, as they have exported for the last 44 years, and to this day, as much as 2,000 tons of shrimp have been exported.
“However, we felt that it is not enough, and that is why we as the ministry will continue to help in terms of infrastructure and others to increase productivity, so that the export value will also be improved,” he said.
