KUCHING: The State Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture are looking into ways to revive the tourism industry in Sarawak following the crippling of the sector due to the Covid-19 crisis.
Its Minister Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said plans to undo the damage to the tourism industry were on the cards.
“We have discussed with the industry players our plans after the recovery movement control order (MCO).
“Among them are our plans to reinstate domestic tourism as well as to encourage tourism from nearby countries such as Brunei and Singapore,” he said when met by reporters after attending the Malaysian Agreement 1963 (MA63) Consultative Committee Meeting at Dewan Undangan Negeri Sarawak on Wednesday (June 10).
He added that understandably, most people, namely citizens of neighbouring countries or states, were still cautious about moving around the country or to other countries at the moment.
Abdul Karim said the ministry was zeroing in on efforts to build up confidence for people to come and visit the state.
“To build up the confidence, we must make it clear to them in our promotions that Sarawak is safe to visit.
“We have to show them ways that safety and health are maintained in our state,” he added.
The State Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) has decided that all interstate travels involving Sarawak and inter-district movements in the state are allowed beginning June 10 but subjected to certain standard operating procedures (SOPs).
