KUCHING : The state government will be seeking inspiration from the art galleries in Singapore with regards to the development of the Sarawak Arts Gallery.
Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Minister Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said that his ministry will be sending a delegation to Singapore in the middle of this year to study the management practices of art galleries in the city-state.
“We are going to Singapore to have a look at how they set up their art gallery.
“It will be this year, either some time in June or July, just to see and study the management of art galleries,” he told reporters when met at Hoan Gallery, La Promenade Mall in a special preview today (Mar 23).
Abdul Karim said the significance of the visit would provide valuable ideas for the operation and administration of the Sarawak Arts Gallery.
“It’s also to look at how we are going to run the building, and the management of art galleries, we need that,” he said.
Meanwhile, Abdul Karim revealed that he also plans to establish an organising body which specialises in art.
“I want to have one body just to handle art, because now we have got one looking after craft. The craft building will be coming up soon also, which is just next to Borneo Cultures Museum,” he said.
The Sarawak Art Gallery will be located at the old Government Printing Office, which was built in 1908, opposite the police station in Padang Merdeka.
“We are going to turn it into an arts and culture building where we can showcase this kind of thing.
“So I hope to get that one kick off soon, because we need to get the architects to come up with the planning for the building,” he said.
