KUCHING: The Kota Samarahan Municipal Council (MPKS) is proposing that a big developer group consider setting up a star-rated hotel under its jurisdiction as part of its oncoming huge project.
MPKS chairman Datuk Peter Minos said such a facility is very much needed, especially when institutions of higher learning like Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS) and Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) are having their convocation ceremonies.
He said that on those occasions, he has received many inquiries from those coming from Sabah and Peninsular Malaysia about accommodation in the area.
“There are three small budget hotels now in Kota Samarahan, but they cannot fully cater to parents, relatives, and friends who are coming over for the convocation ceremony,” he said in a statement today (June 17).
In the next five years, Minos said there will be many big public and private sector projects coming up in Kota Samarahan, resulting in officials, associates, and clients needing hotel rooms.
“At the moment, groups and agencies wanting to organise functions, conferences, and seminars have to go to Kuching for the big hotels, and this includes MPKS itself.
“When the serious traffic congestion problems have been solved and with the upcoming Autonomous Rail Transit (ART), there will be a second wave of development in Kota Samarahan, like housing, shops, and offices.
“It is our hope that a star-rated hotel will have clients and customers in such a development,” he said.
With a star-rated hotel being developed in Kota Samarahan, he said it will add to the quality of life in the area.
“This is why MPKS is initiating the move for a private group to think about and consider the setting up of a star-rated hotel in Kota Samarahan,” he added.
