KUCHING: The Miri Airport interchange is taking shape with construction work now focusing on its crossheads and beam launching.

According to Michael Ting, LBU construction manager for Pujut Link Section under Sungai Tangap-Pujut Link Road (Works Package 11), so far eight of the 16 crossheads and one of two abutments have been completed.

“We started the beam launching works on Oct 16 at spans with the completed crossheads and Abutment B. “We target that by April next year, the remaining eight crossheads and one abutment will be done. By then, the public will be able to visualise the new interchange which improves traffic between Taman Tunku and Pujut Link Road, and enables a smoother drive from Miri towards the Kuala Baram area.

“Once this is done, we will continue with the balance beam launching for this 548m long flyover and the process will take one to two months to complete. Hopefully, we get this done by May next year,” he said.

With the beams launched, construction will proceed to do the diaphragm beam, deck slab, parapet wall and the at-grade.

“We hope to be able to open the flyover for traffic once we have laid the wearing course. Our target for this is by August next year,” explained Ting.

Under Pan Borneo Highway Sarawak’s Works Package 11 (Sungai Tangap to Pujut Link Road), with a road length of 80km, there are three sections, namely Beluru, Lambir and Pujut.

Other than Miri Airport Interchange, three other interchanges are sited in Bekenu, Beluru and Pujut Link Road. The main contractor of this works package is Konsortium KPE Sdn Bhd.
