MIRI: In an effort to rejuvenate the urban landscape and preserve the city’s architectural heritage, the Miri City Council has announced plans to repainting and repair neglected buildings across the city.
Landlords and occupiers of buildings in dilapidated conditions will receive notices from the council, outlining the necessary repairs and a specified timeframe for completion.
The city council in a statement today said the initiative aims to enhance the aesthetic appeal of Miri while also ensuring the safety and structural integrity of its buildings.
Council officials stressed the importance of maintaining the city’s charm and historical character through proactive measures such as this.
Property owners are urged to comply with the notices promptly to contribute to the overall beautification and revitalisation of Miri’s urban environment.
Failure to adhere to the council’s directives may result in further enforcement actions to uphold the city’s standards of cleanliness and upkeep.
It is an offence under By-Laws 24 of The Local Authorities (Cleanliness) By-Laws, 1999 and By-Laws 21 Part IV of Building By-Laws, 1994 without reasonable cause, fails or refuses to comply with the requirements of the notice within the time specified shall be guilty of an offence, and shall on conviction be liable to a fine of five hundred ringgit and a further fine of one hundred ringgit for each day after conviction until the order is complied with.
The council may take measures or works required to repaint the building to acceptable standard and recover all expenses thereof from the owner or occupier who make defaults to comply with the requirements of the notice within the time specified therein.
