MIRI: Business events have become the in-thing in many cities and Miri wants to cash in on these prospects confident it is ready to host world-class events.

Miri Business Events Committee (MBEC) chairman Adam Yii is thus calling for more business events to be organised here to give impetus to the city’s economic transformation and social development.

He urged business event planners to consider Miri as their next destination for various events such as national and international conventions, exhibitions, corporate meetings and as an incentive destination.

“With strong support from the Ministry of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Sarawak, Business Events Sarawak and the industry partners, Miri is more than ready to host world-class business events,” he said.

Yii who is also the Mayor added that they are looking at medium size business events at the moment while advocating to have their own convention and exhibitions centre in order to effectively drive the sector.

“International cities around the world are capitalising on business events as one of the enablers to further transform their economic and social development.

“It makes sense for Miri to be part of this progressive thinking,” he said during the third MBEC meeting here on Monday (July 4).

Meanwhile, Business Events Sarawak chief executive officer Amelia Roziman said they are currently working closely with the committee members on their aspirations to be Malaysia’s Business Event City.

“Spearheaded by PCDS 2030’s objectives, we are progressively bidding, supporting and developing homegrown events while focusing on, but not limited to, topics related to the oil and gas, engineering education, agriculture, and tourism sectors across Miri,” she explained.
