MIRI: Miri MP Chiew Choon Man has taken a proactive step towards enhancing sports facilities by investing RM100,000 in a new sports field adjacent to SMK Lutong.

Recognising the importance of sustained support, he has not only initiated infrastructure development but has also demonstrated his commitment to fostering the development of aspiring athletes at SMK Lutong.

In addition to the generous investment in the sports field, Chiew donated RM4,000 to support the school’s athletes, further underlining his dedication to their growth and success.

In a Facebook post, he highlighted SMK Lutong’s rich history of producing champions who have brought honor to Malaysia on the global stage.

Despite the school’s achievements, he lamented that the untold struggles of its athletes remain hidden to many.

“Recently, a teacher approached me seeking assistance for students from farming families and low-income backgrounds who had qualified to represent Sarawak at Sukma (Malaysia Games). These students lacked the means to purchase sports attire.”

Touched by their plight, Chiew sponsored a shopping spree at Permaisuri Imperial City Mall, ensuring the students had everything they needed to compete.

Acknowledging the financial hardships faced by the students, Chiew praised their parents for never deterring them from pursuing their dreams of becoming athletes.

He noted the daily sacrifices made by these students, juggling schoolwork, training sessions, and additional chores at home.

Despite these challenges, their resilience and determination have propelled them forward, establishing them as formidable competitors in the sporting arena.

Chiew pointed out that the financial constraints faced by students from rural areas in Sarawak and Sabah are not uncommon, hindering their participation in higher-level competitions.

Vowing to address this issue, he pledged to advocate for increased funding from the federal government to support these athletes, ensuring that no deserving talent is left behind under the banner of Malaysia Madani.
