MIRI: The overall crime index in Miri has dropped since the implementation of the movement control order (MCO) on March 18.
Miri district police chief ACP Lim Meng Seah said dropping crime cases included auto thefts, break-ins, thefts, drug cases and domestic violence cases.
“Most of the cases received now are of people defying the MCO directive,” he said when met by reporters.
Asked to comment on a recent statement that Miri was among the districts that recorded the highest cases in domestic violence during the MCO, Lim pointed out that the cases were recorded throughout the year and not just during the order.
He said yesterday morning, police arrested a local man who was found drinking in a public area and violating the MCO.
Lim added that the 61-year-old offender was arrested at 8.50am by a team from Miri Central police station.
“During a Covid-19 patrol, the team found the individual drinking and playing Chinese chess at the five-foot-way of Pos Laju Boulevard Commercial Centre.
“Although he had been advised several times, the man remained stubborn and was later arrested for flouting the MCO order,” he said.
The case is investigated under Regulation 11(1) of the Prevention and Control of Infectious Diseases (Measures within the Infected Local Areas) Regulations 2020.
