MIRI: The Miri Petroleum Women Association (PWPM) will be celebrating its 33rd anniversary at the Eastwood Golf Club here on Nov 9.

The association, which was accorded the Registrar of Societies (ROS) Friendly Societies Award in 2018, has been recognised as the most active non-governmental organisation (NGO) with the most multiracial group.

It was founded in 1986 as a non-profit organisation by Mary Jaya, gathering the wives of Shell, Petronas and oil-related companies for fellowship.

In 1996, its membership was expanded to include all women in Miri to encourage more cross-cultural exchange.

This is the only NGO that has different nationalities from Japan, Singapore, Indonesia, Australia, Scotland, Nigeria, the Philippines, among others.

President Srimurniyati Cranfield

Currently, under president Srimurniyati Cranfield and her committee, PWPM has been very active with its weekly activities.

It also holds annual open houses to maintain the unity of all races during festivals like Hari Raya, Gawai, Chinese New Year, Mother’s Day, International Women’s Day and Malaysia Day.

This year, PWPM will focus on rendering assistance to the less fortunate, including Kenosis, a rehabilitation centre to help individuals and families impacted by drug addiction.

PWPM will also focus on sharing their knowledge and culture exchange through cooking demonstration, handicraft, talks and fundraising for charitable bodies.
