MIRI: A total of 13 individuals, including 11 locals and two foreign nationals, were arrested for suspected drug-related activities here on Friday (Oct 25).
Miri District Police Chief ACP Alexson Naga Chabu said the operation was led by a team from the Narcotics Criminal Investigation Division of the Miri District Police Headquarters (IPD).
The first raid, conducted at a rental house in Sungai Baong, resulted in the seizure of 30 grams of a substance suspected to be methamphetamine, locally known as ‘Syabu.’
The seized drugs have an estimated street value of RM 3,300.
Alexson said this portion of the case is being investigated under Section 39A(2) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, which prescribes severe penalties, including life imprisonment and a minimum of 10 strokes of the cane, upon conviction.
In a follow-up operation in the same area, police found an additional 1.71 grams of the suspected drug, valued at approximately RM 188.10.
The second case is being handled under Section 12(2) of the same act, which carries potential penalties of up to RM 100,000 in fines or five years’ imprisonment, or both.
All suspects are scheduled for a remand hearing at the Miri court to facilitate further investigations under the Dangerous Drugs Act.
