MIRI: Miri Port Authority (MPA) has embarked on the highly anticipated Batang Baram Delta dredging project.
Described as a significant milestone, the 33-month project is expected to be completed by early 2027.
Speaking at its customer and Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE) open day on Monday, MPA chairman Dato Palu @ Paulus Palu Gumbang underscored the importance of the project in aligning with Sarawak’s vision of becoming a progressive state.
“This project is another improvement to our service delivery and will play a crucial role in transforming Miri’s economic landscape,” he said.
The dredging of the Batang Baram Delta, a vital waterway for the port, is seen as essential for improving trade routes and bolstering the region’s economic growth.
It will not only ensure smoother access for larger vessels but also strengthen Miri’s position as a key player in Sarawak’s broader economic development.
At the event, Palu also emphasised the significance of integrating HSE practices as part of MPA’s strategic focus to maintain its competitive edge.
“To advance as a developed nation, we must excel not only in economic and technological aspects but also in health, safety, and environmental management,” he said.
“Our commitment to ‘Workplace Safety, Everyone’s Responsibility’ is integral to creating a safe and competitive environment for both our customers and staff.”
He highlighted the importance of the open day event as a reminder of the role HSE plays not just in the workplace but in everyday life.
The event was attended by 200 participants, including members of the port and shipping community, government agencies, and business associates.
Also present was MPA General Manager Serawa Budol.
