KUCHING: Miri made the largest drug bust in Sarawak involving seizures amounting to RM100,080 in round two of the anti-narcotics operation codenamed ‘Ops Tapis’.
Next was Sibu (RM65,389) followed by Kuching (RM55,275).
The three-day operation, a collaboration led by the Sarawak Contingent Police and Criminal Investigation Department along with the different police agencies, began on Feb 27 and ended on Wednesday (March 1).
Sarawak Police Commissioner Datuk Mohd Azman Ahmad Sapri said the total value of the seizures were around RM227,060 with methamphetamine being the highest at 2.236 grams, followed by 13 pills of Erimin 5, 67.10gm of cannabis and 0.25gm of ketamine.
He was speaking at a press conference at the Sarawak police headquarters today.
A total of 282 were arrested during ‘Ops Tapis’ for drug offences.
“The 282 individuals included 14 women, aged between 17 and 63 years old.
“The individuals will be investigated under the Dangerous Drugs Acts 1952,” he said.
Mohd Azman said eight suspects were arrested under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, three suspects under Section 39A(2), eight suspects under Section 39A(1), 65 suspects under Section 12(2), one suspect under Section 6, and 197 suspects under Section 15(1)(a).
Since Jan 1 to Feb 28, the Sarawak Narcotics Crime Investigation Department recorded its highest arrest of 2,226 individuals, confiscating RM3,408,073 worth of drugs.
The police chief said that 197 individuals or 70 per cent from the 282 arrested individuals tested positive for drugs.
