KUCHING: Two students from Miri have done the nation proud by bringing back five trophies, 17 gold and three silver medals through their achievements in the World Scholar’s Cup (WSC) Tournament which was held in Yale University, USA. The tournament was held from Nov 16 to 21. Amitha Praveen Karunakaran and Tanman Kaur Sangha participated in the WSC season and managed to get eighth place in the overall team championship.
Amitha’s individual achievements include securing the position of the eighth best debater and the seventh best in the Collaborative Writing category. Tanman managed to get a gold medal in debate and a top 100 placing in Collaborative Writing. Amitha also won four medals in the Scholars’ Challenge whereas Tanman won three.
Their team achievements are: top 15th overall debate champions, fourth team writing champions and 16th team bowl champions. Amitha secured the 10th individual overall champion. Tanman is currently doing her Foundation Year in Law in Multimedia University Malaysia and Amitha Praveen Karunakaran is doing her A Levels in Riam Institute of Technology.
Their third team member is Andrea Zhao from Canada who won 13 medals. WSC is an international team academic programme with students from 58 countries participating. It focuses on bringing students from different cultures together to discuss relevant issues and ideas.
The tournament has attracted what it calls “a global community of future scholars and leaders”, and allows participants to “discover strengths and skills you never knew you had.” Each season consists of three rounds namely, the Regionals, the Globals and the final round, the Tournament of Champions. The competition is held in Yale University each year. Each team has to qualify through each round to reach the final round.
There were about 700 teams participating in the junior and senior categories from all over the world with 2,300 scholars involved. WSC is a co-academic competition involving individual and group quizzes, essay writing and debates in six areas, namely science, social studies, history, literature, human relationships, and arts and music.
