MIRI: Miri will host the first-ever state-level pickleball tournament from Nov 22 to 24, bringing together hundreds of players, including international participants.

Miri, known as the birthplace of pickleball in Malaysia, was chosen as the venue to celebrate its pioneering role in introducing the sport locally.

Deputy Minister for Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts I (Tourism), Datuk Sebastian Ting Chiew Yew, noted that the Sarawak Pickleball Open Tournament 2024 underscores a commitment to promoting both sport and healthy living across communities.

“Pickleball’s rapid growth reflects an inclusive spirit—it’s a sport for all ages and skill levels, encouraging active engagement for everyone,” he said in a press conference Tuesday (Oct 29).

Organised by the Sarawak Pickleball Association with support from the Ministry of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts, the event is set to take place at Myy Mall in Lutong.

Around 300 to 350 players, including professionals from Hong Kong and Taiwan, are expected to participate, with over 200 athletes already registered.

The tournament will feature seven categories, including Open Men’s and Women’s Singles, Men’s and Women’s Doubles, Intermediate Mixed Doubles, Open Master Mixed-Doubles, and Open Mixed-Doubles.

Cash prizes ranging from RM2,000 to RM4,000 will be awarded to champions in each category, alongside medals.

With a mission to promote Sarawak as a vibrant hub for sporting events, the tournament also aims to boost local tourism and showcase the unique culture and hospitality of the region.

“Events like these attract visitors, build local talent, and position Sarawak on the international sports map,” added Ting.

The tournament remains open to participants aged 13 and above, and registration is still ongoing.

Also in attendance were Malaysia Pickleball Association president Farell Choo, who expressed excitement about the sport’s growing momentum in Malaysia, and Sarawak Pickleball Association president Delima Ibrahim.
