MIRI: This year’s head of state, Tun Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmdud’s 86th birthday celebration will be held in Miri with a total 86 contingents taking part in the three-day event which is scheduled to kick off on October 7.
According to Minister of Transport Datuk Seri Lee Kim Shin who is also the event organising chairperson, the celebration would consist of five segments and to commence with the thanksgiving prayer at Masjid At -Taqwa Miri on October 7 at 5.30pm.
Tun and his wife Toh Puan Datuk Patinggi Kurdi Raghad Taib are expected to arrive at about 6.3pm.
They will be joining by Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg and his wife Datuk Amar Jumaa’ni Tun Tuanku Bujang.
Cabinet minister and local community leaders are also expected to join in the event along with 1,200 people.
Similar prayers by other religious institutions are also to be carried out at Eastwood Valley Golf and Country Club.
The highlight of the programme is the grand parade which to be held on Saturday October 8 at Miri Stadium with a total of 3,440 people from 86 contingents comprising uniformed bodies, non-governmental organisations (NGOs), private sectors, non-uniformed bodies and students.
“The grand parade will kick off at 8am and public are welcome to attend at the event,” said Lee yesterday after chairing a meeting on the event’s preparations.
On the morning (October 8), at 11am, Taib is scheduled to grace at an investure ceremony to be held at Meritz Hotel.
In the evening, Taib and his wife with others state cabinet minister would attend the state banquet at Pullman Miri Waterfront at 8pm.
On Sunday morning (October 9), Taib and his wife will attend the high tea reception at Eastwood Valley Golf and Country Club Miri and will present gift and cash to a total 150 underprivileged persons.
Taib was born on May 21, 1936 and is the 7th governor of Sarawak since March 1, 2014.
