SIBU: A ‘Miring’ ceremony was held at the Sibu Town Square Phase I yesterday to ensure the well-being of the BASE jumpers and the smooth running of the event. “Miring’ ceremonies are usually performed by the Ibans to appease the gods and spirits and receive blessings from them. The tenth edition of Sibu International BASE Jump runs from today until Sunday.
The BASE jumpers will leap from the 126-metre Wisma Sanyan, Sarawak’s tallest building,to the open space at Sibu Town Square Phase 1. 34 jumpers from various countries including the United States, Australia and Canada have confirmed their participation in the event. The extreme sports event is organised by the Sibu Resident Office with the cooperation of the Malaysian BASE Association.
The crowd will see “Superheroes” such as Superman, Batman, Iron Man, Hulk, Captain America, Wonder Woman and others in action as the jumpers will wearing the superheroes costumes while jumping from Wisma Sanyan, the tallest building in Sarawak. Apart from that, an exhibition and trade fair carnival is being held at the Sibu Town Square Phase II from September 12 to 23 in conjunction with the BASE Jump.
Other activities include “Walk-A-Mile”, night cycling by the Swan Cycling Club, folk games and traditional games. Various activities have been held and are being held to mark the 10th anniversary of the Sibu BASE Jump. Among the activities are a kite demonstration show, skateboard shows and competitions, strongman competitions, colouring contests for all ages and the launch of the rabies awareness programme.
